Creating an Android app with Pinch

With over 3 billion active devices, Android is the world’s most widely used operating system. Android and iOS both have a significant market share, so it is generally wise to have an app developed for both operating systems. Pinch has already developed dozens of successful Android apps, including those for clients like Qmusic, De Telegraaf, NRC, and Parkmobile.

Android: the largest mobile OS

While Apple’s iOS operating system runs on about 28 percent of mobile devices worldwide, Google’s Android operating system has a dominant market share of around 70 percent. iOS is only found on (relatively expensive) iPhones and iPads, while almost all other mobile devices run on Android.

There are a few notable differences between the platforms. Android is open-source and offers more customization options. Over the years, however, the differences between Android and iOS have become increasingly smaller.

Native or hybrid?

Native means developing specifically for one platform, either Android or iOS. In recent years, an increasing number of apps are being developed using cross-platform frameworks like Flutter. This framework, developed by Google, allows designers and developers to simultaneously create Android and iOS apps. Not only does this lead to faster and more cost-effective app development, but it also offers advantages in terms of user interface and updates. However, it’s worth noting that Flutter may not be suitable for all types of apps. Feel free to contact Pinch to get advice on developing your app.

From smartwatches to gaming consoles

Android is used not only for smartphones and tablets but also has a variant for wearables such as smartwatches, called Wear OS. Additionally, the operating system is used in various other devices, including televisions, gaming consoles, and cars. Pinch has a lot of experience in developing apps for wearables.

One OS, a wide variety of flavours

For non-insiders, it is often a mystery: Android smartphones from different manufacturers can have completely different user interfaces. This is because manufacturers develop their own custom version (‘skin’). Google Pixel phones come close to the ‘stock’ Android of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). However, for example, Samsung One UI and Xiaomi MIUI are heavily customized, and they do not resemble the stock Android in the slightest.
